People with covert narcissism might make dismissive or sarcastic remarks and act as if they’re above the criticism. For instance, NPD and AUD both involve psychotherapy, but the formats for each can vary. For NPD, it may involve individual or group counseling using cognitive behavioral therapy, schema-focused therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy. By doing so, a person is less likely to be “over-treated” for a condition they may not actually have. NPD and AUD frequently co-exist and can increase the effects of each other.

While narcissistic personality disorder is a distinct diagnosis, individuals can exhibit narcissistic traits without meeting the full criteria for the disorder. In addition to problem recognition, important factors that might maintain or change drinking behavior are expectancies and evaluations of problems.

The overt narcissist will demand admiration and attention, where the covert narcissist will use softer tactics to meet those same goals. The covert narcissist will be much more likely to constantly seek reassurance about their talents, skills, and accomplishments, looking for others to feed that same need for self-importance. This free narcissistic personality test may be helpful in assessing whether or not you or someone you know display signs of narcissism. Covert narcissism is characterized by the same behaviors of overt narcissism that are displayed in less obvious, more subtle ways. The exact causes for this are not known, but genetics and early relationships may play a role.

Though it is against our prediction, it isn’t completely surprising that vulnerable narcissists expect to experience problems. Their insecurity and low self-esteem might lead them to expect bad situations to occur.27 It is also possible that vulnerable narcissists expect problems to happen to them based on their previous experiences with alcohol problems. Very little research has been conducted specifically on narcissism’s effect on problem recognition or a person’s readiness to change. A person struggling with alcoholism can appear to dismiss friends and family to spend time with others that support their need to drink excessively. This can include an inflated sense of self-importance, entitlement, disregard for others’ feelings, and an increased need for admiration and validation. One limitation of this study is the lack of diversity in the sample’s age (18–25) and race (88% Caucasian). Some research has found racial differences in regards to college drinking.

During a fight, they may grab their partner’s arm, throw something, or make threats.
